Training Together

February 27 and 28, 2006

At Trout Run Fire Station

More than 40 members from Hepburn Twp, Trout Run and Ralston Fire Departments came together for our Annual Haz Mat refresher training. PA State Fire Instructor John West provided the learning experience.
Monday's training was primarily an "Awareness" Refresher. Tuesday's "Operational" session featured a hazardous materials incident simulation. Everyone got involved.
The scenario was a vehicle accident with a truck into a pole just outside Station 16. Crews had to establish incident command to mitigate the incident.
Responding crews found a tractor trailer (simulated), which was placarded, with the driver standing outside the truck appearing confused and covered in some material.
Proper operational procedures, decontamination and EMS services had to be taken care of.
Instructor John West demonstrates packaging a victim of a hazardous materials accident who had just been completely decontaminated - that means clothing removal (simulated) and all!
Discussing the need for decontamination and demonstrating a possible method for establishing a containment area for decon.
Yep!!!

That's county dispatching the simulated alarm.

The Incident Commander discusses the incident with some of his command staff.
The Engine crew looks on as the Operational Officer surveys the incident scene with binoculars. They determine the numbers on the placards and report back to incident command for orders.
After receiving their precautionary instructions, the engine crew is sent to retreive the victim.
The victim was removed from the hot zone and brought into the decon site. He was instructed to enter through the cones and to enter the pond where he was to be unclothed and decontaminated.
The victim was then packaged (above), placed on a backboard and prepared to be transported to a medical facility.
