July 29, 2005: Vehicle accident in front of Hepburn Baptist Church

Vacation Bible School closing service was underway around 6:30 pm when suddenly the children and their families heard a loud "boom" that some described as sounding like a bomb. Fire Policeperson Fern Schon was inside the church and went in the direction of the sound to investigate. What she saw was a pick-up truck and a 4 door sedan, both badly damaged, sitting on the bank in front of the church. She immediately called 911, then returned to determine how many people were involved. What she found was 3 adults and 4 children involved. Lycoming County 911 Center immediately toned for assistance from Hepburn Twp. Vol. Fire Co., Trout Run Vol. Fire Co., Old Lycoming Twp. Vol. Fire Co., Eldred Twp. Vol. Fire Co., Loyalsock Vol. Fire Co., Williamsport Bureau of Fire (stationed at Old Lycoming), Woodward Twp. Vol. Fire Co., DuBoistown Vol. Fire Co. and 2 Life Flight Helicopters.

The vehicles had collided almost head-on, resulting in entrapment and serious injury for the driver of the sedan. Her children were also injured, with one being flown to Geisinger, followed by his Mother being flown after she was extricated from her vehicle.

All others involved were transported by ambulances to Williamsport Hospital for treatment and care. Pennsylvania State Police remained on scene until almost midnight investigating the incident. Personnel from from Hepburn Fire Co. remained to assist PSP if needed, and Fire Police from Hepburn and Old Lycoming remained on scene to control traffic.
