November 20, 2006: Tractor Trailer Over Embankment with Entrapment

Hepburn Township and Trout Run Vol. Fire Companies were dispatched to a reported Tractor Trailer over the embankment of US Route 15 on to Lycoming Creek Road. What was found was one of the most complicated vehicle rescues. The driver was literally entrapped by the entire cab pinning his legs into the vehicle.

Trout Run Fire Chief Robert Whitford was incident Commander. After his arrival on scene, he immediately determined the enormous extent of the entrapment and special called many additional rescue units to this scene. The tractor trailer was traveling northbound on US Rote 15 approximately 10 miles north of Williamsport just west of Powy's. The truck went over the eastern berm which left it air bound for a while as it fell approximately 100 feet on to Lycoming Creek Road. The vehicle rested on its side. The impact was enough to allow its entire load of frozen chicken breasts to come flying out on the the road and berm.

The driver and his passenger were from Ontario, Canada. The passenger was not entrapped and was quickly loaded into an ambulance and taken to Williamsport Hospital. He was later released with minor injuries. The driver was entrapped for more than three hours as rescue workers attempted to remove the cab fom above him piece by piece, After he was finally extricated. he was flown to Geisinger Medical Center by Life Flight. Miraculously, his injuries were minor.
