January 10, 2009: Entrapment in a Skidster in Hepburn Township

Station 15 and 14 was dispatched to a Rescue Assignment on Whippoorwill Lane in Hepburn Township a little before 2:00 pm today. A male was reported to be entrapped in a Skidster for the past two hours. It was a snowy, cold day with temperatures in the 20's. Two medic units, Old Lycoming Police Department, and equipment from Station 1 also were dispatched.

The victim actually made the call to 911 after he became conscious and managed to get his cell phone from his pocket. He had suffered from some crushing injuries as well as hypothermia. After EMS performed protocol procedures and the Skidster was stabilized with cribbing and high lift jacks, rescuers attempted to disassemble the Skidster to free the victim. A front wheel and the bucket were carefully and meticulously removed. The patient was then placed on a long board and placed in a sked and covered with warming blankets. The victim was then taken to Ambulance 15 and transported to the Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center.
