Mill Hill Road, Lycoming Township • March 31, 2001

Saturday morning, March 31, a little after 9:00 am, the Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to a reported chimney fire at 701 Mill Hill Road. After Station 15 units arrived on the scene, it was determined the chimney fire was totally contained within the chimney. The fire was still roaring. The fire department uses a ramming nozzle to suppress this type of fire. We affectionately refer to this nozzle as "Snuffy". The ram disperses a spray of water which quickly changes to steam which aids in the extinguishment process. Only about a quart of water is sprayed per minute. It works excellent with no damage to the chimney.

Following are a few photos of this incident.

This was the big picture. The wood burner was in the basement. Look close and you will see Firefighters Nathan Confer and James Yeagle on the roof. Captain Sharon Tempesco is Engineer of Engine 15. Lieutenant Robert Bower is in charge of the crew at the wood burner.
The handline attached to Snuffy is inserted into the chimney by Nate and Jim. Sharon assists on the ground.
